Kecskemét, the eighth-largest city in Hungary, may not have a multitude of attractions, but it's certainly worth a day trip, especially considering it's only 1 hour and 20 minutes from Budapest.
Be sure to explore Kossuth tér, named after Hungarian statesman Lajos Kossuth, who played a significant role during the Revolution of 1848-1849. This square still retains the medieval small-town atmosphere and is home to the town hall and a more than 600-year-old church.
One of Kecskemét's unique features is the harmonious coexistence of ancient and Art Nouveau buildings. Don't miss the Cifra Palota Palace, which translates to the "Decorated Palace" and now houses the Kecskemét Art Gallery, showcasing the finest works of Hungarian artists from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
The city also boasts interesting attractions like a toy museum with a workshop for making toys and the only photography museum in Hungary, featuring an exhibition of approximately 3,000 photographs.
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the Kiskunszág National Park, located between Kecskemét and Szeged. This vast area spanning 31,000 hectares offers unique landscapes and is home to various species of waterfowl.
