1. Grand Canal

It's unthinkable to visit Venice without seeing the Grand Canal — the largest of its canals, crossing the entire city. Its banks are lined with the most beautiful buildings and famous palazzos, such as Ca' d'Oro and Barbarigo. In the rays of the setting sun, the city acquires an incomparable charm.

The Grand Canal starts at the Venice train station and ends at the customs building. The best way to see all the city's beauties from the water is to take a ride on a water bus (vaporetto).

2. St. Mark's Basilica

Address: Piazza San Marco, 328

Undoubtedly, one of the most popular cathedrals in Venice — St. Mark's Basilica (or San Marco) — captures the imagination at first glance. The majestic Byzantine architecture, lace-like portals and columns, elegant domes — the building impresses with its monumentality and airiness at the same time.

Inside, the basilica is just as interesting as the exterior. It houses the relics of the apostle Mark, the city's patron, and you can also see many art objects brought to Venice during the Crusades. The main treasure is the Golden Altar (Pala d'Oro) made of 80 icons adorned with gold and precious stones. It took almost five centuries to create!

Cathedral opening hours: November–April — 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Sundays and holidays — 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Museum — 9:45 AM to 4:45 PM. April to November schedule: basilica — 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Sundays and holidays — 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Museum — 9:35 AM to 5:00 PM.

Entrance fee: Free entrance to the basilica

How to get to the cathedral: From Piazzale Roma stop — vaporetto No. 1; vaporetto No. 51 and vaporetto No. 2, from Santa Lucia train station — on vaporetto No. 1, 2, and 51.

3. Piazza San Marco

After visiting the majestic St. Mark's Basilica, don't miss the opportunity to stroll through one of Venice's most beautiful squares — the namesake of the famous cathedral.

In addition to ubiquitous pigeons, the square is known for being surrounded by historic buildings. The Doge's Palace, bell tower, columns of St. Mark and St. Theodore, the cathedral, and the library — the number of attractions on St. Mark's Square can rival a small European town.

How to get here: From Santa Lucia station, take the water bus No. 1 (direction Lido), stop San Marco.

4. Church of San Pantalon

Address: Sestiere Dorsoduro, 3703

This majestic church is not as popular among tourists as St. Mark's Basilica, but it should be. Here lies the world's largest painted canvas — the ceiling painting by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani. Its area exceeds 700 square meters, and it is also a trompe-l'oeil. The artist did not use traditional framing for the painting, making it appear that the artwork flows from the ceiling to the walls.

You can't photograph the painting, but you can buy its image from the church attendant (prices start at €5, depending on the size).

The church is a 10-minute walk from Piazzale Roma. Entrance is free.

Opening hours: Monday, Tuesday, Friday — 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM; Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday — 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM to 7:00 PM; Sunday — 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM

5. Gallerie dell'Accademia

Address: Campo della Carità, 1050

Venice, like a giant treasure chest, is full of art and architecture. While you can admire the latter simply by strolling around the city, it's best to get acquainted with the masterpieces of art in the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

Here is the largest collection of Venetian paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries: Titian, Tintoretto, Tiepolo, and many others. And the gallery building itself — it is housed in the Church of Santa Maria della Carità — is worth attention.

Opening hours: Monday — 8:15 AM to 2:00 PM, Tuesday to Sunday — 8:15 AM to 7:15 PM. The museum is closed on December 25 and January 1.

Entrance fee: €9 (gallery + Palazzo Grimani), free for visitors under 18 years old

Note: On Valentine's Day, the museum offers one free ticket for a pair of visitors. On International Women's Day, all women get free entry.

6. Doge's Palace

Address: San Marco 1, Piazzetta San Marco, 2

Located on St. Mark's Square, the Doge's Palace can rightfully be considered its gem. The former residence of the Venetian government, today it attracts tourists with its rich interiors, majestic halls, and, of course, countless masterpieces of painting and more (such as the Hall of Maps, decorated with ancient hand-drawn maps, the Golden Staircase, or the Hall of the Senate, whose walls are painted by great Italian artists).

Entrance fee: You can buy a combined ticket — with it, you get access to the Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico, and Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. It costs €25 (children under 5 years old — free). The ticket is valid for 3 months from the date of purchase but can only be used for one visit to each attraction.

Opening hours: April to October, Sunday to Thursday — 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday — 8:30 AM to 11:00 PM; November to March — 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM

You can get there by vaporetto from Santa Lucia or Piazzale Roma (No. 1, stop Vallaresso or San Zaccaria; No. 2, stop Giardinetti).

7. Ca' d'Oro

Address: Fondamenta Trapolin, 3932

This magnificent lace-like building on the Grand Canal has perhaps become as much a symbol of the city as the Doge's Palace or the canal itself.

In former days, the building's facade was decorated with gold leaf, which is why it was called the Golden House. Today, this architectural marvel also attracts visitors not only with the beauty of its facades but also with its rich collection of artworks housed within its walls.

Opening hours: Monday — 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM; Tuesday to Sunday — 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM.

Entrance fee: €15, free for visitors under 18 years old

8. Bridge of Sighs

Address: Piazza San Marco, 1

The name of one of Venice's oldest bridges is actually not related to romance. The sighs were not from lovers, as one might think, but from prisoners being led to prison across this bridge from the Doge's Palace.

However, today few people remember this, and the elegant white marble baroque structure on the Palace Canal attracts crowds of tourists for a completely different reason. According to a city legend, lovers who pass under this bridge at sunset will keep their love eternal and mutual.

9. Santa Maria della Salute

Address: Dorsoduro, 1

The church impresses with its exterior beauty and interior decor — here are many beautiful mosaics, icons, and statues, and, of course, paintings: the church is adorned with works by Tintoretto, Titian, and Giordano.

Santa Maria della Salute is located on the Grand Canal, opposite the Doge's Palace. You can get here by vaporetto No. 1 (the stop is right at the entrance).

Entrance is free.

The church is open for visits from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Note: On November 21, Venetians celebrate Festa della Salute (a festival in honor of the city's liberation from the plague in 1630). On this day, a pontoon bridge is laid out, allowing you to walk from the church to the Doge's Palace.

10. Arsenal Bridge

Everyone knows that Venice is famous for its bridges as much as its canals and palaces. To find the oldest one, head to the Rio dell'Arsenale canal. You can easily recognize it: two jagged red stone towers on the canal banks connected by a wooden bridge, built back in the 16th century and still standing today.

You can book a hotel with a discount of up to 65% on the website.

11. Burano Island

After enjoying the beauties of Venice, dedicate a day to Burano Island. You won't find impressive landmarks here (just two main ones – the Lace Museum and the Church of San Martino), but you can escape the crowds and noise of touristy Venice.

Stroll through the narrow alleys (or should we say docks?) of Burano, admiring its famous colorful houses. Make sure to visit a local pastry shop, where you can taste the traditional "buranelli" biscuits, and have a delicious grilled fish at a snack bar right by the dock.

You can reach Burano by water tram (vaporetto) for €15, departing from the Faro Murano stop.

12. Correr Museum

Another treasure trove of Venice is the Correr Museum, a delight for all aesthetes and lovers of beauty. The museum consists of three parts: the Risorgimento Museum (collections of paintings, weapons, and applied arts), the Picture Gallery (paintings from the 12th to 17th centuries), and the Archaeological Museum (collections of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman antiquities).

You can also explore the history of the Venetian Republic here: 33 rooms display personal items of its doges, navigation instruments and maps, weapons, flags, and much more.

Address: San Marco, 52, entrance from Piazza San Marco

Opening Hours: November 1 to March 31, Sunday to Thursday: 10:30 to 17:00, Friday-Saturday: 10:30 to 19:00; April 1 to October 31: 10:00 to 19:00.

Entrance Fee: €32

13. Murano

When talking about Venice, we cannot forget its famous Venetian glass, highly prized worldwide. You can visit the birthplace of legendary glassblowers by visiting the district of Murano.

This is a real "city within a city": Murano even has its own churches and palaces. But tourists are attracted not by these, but by the Glass Museum and souvenir shops, where you can find elegant and amazingly beautiful Murano glass products. For just a few euros, you can also visit a glassblowing workshop and observe the delicate process of creating these wonders!

14. Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo

Address: San Marco, 4303, near the Rialto Bridge. The palace is located in a courtyard called Corti dei Risi or Corte del Bovolo.

This palace stands apart from other famous palaces. Unlike its counterparts on the Grand Canal, Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is located near Piazza San Marco, away from the central streets, and is not known for its luxury. It's a compact building that blends Renaissance, Gothic, and Byzantine styles, but it's not ostentatious.

What attracts tourists here is the famous arched spiral staircase that gave the palace its name ("bovolo" in Italian means "snail"). For a small fee, you can climb to the rooftop for a magnificent view of the city.

It's best to visit the palace in the morning when there are fewer tourists.

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday: 10:00 to 18:00.

15. Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari

Address: San Polo, 3072

Venice's churches are as rich in art treasures as its museums. This church is no exception. Here you can see works by Titian, the only work by Donatello in Venice (a wooden statue of John the Baptist), and the choir stalls where each of the 124 seats features the face of a saint. The 70-meter bell tower offers a magnificent view of the city.

Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday: 09:00 to 18:00, Sunday: 13:00 to 18:00

Entrance Fee: €6

16. Ca' Pesaro Palace

Address: Santa Croce, 2076

Among the many palaces adorning the Grand Canal, Ca' Pesaro is also a museum of modern art. Its collection includes works by Chagall, Kandinsky, Matisse, Klimt, and other world-renowned masters. So, if you tire of the splendor of Renaissance paintings, the museum will provide a delightful variety during your tour of Venice.

Opening Hours: The palace is open from 10:00 to 17:00.

Entrance Fee: €12.50

17. Mercerie District

In Italian, "mercier" means a trading street with shops and boutiques on the ground floors of buildings. The Mercerie District stretches from Piazza San Marco to the Rialto Bridge.

This is the main "souvenir artery" of Venice: in these shops, you will find all kinds of souvenirs and accessories in retro style, from pens made of Venetian glass to carnival masks and dolls. Even if shopping isn't on your agenda, it's worth coming here for the unique atmosphere and a wealth of impressions.

18. Santa Maria del Giglio Church

Address: Campo Santa Maria del Giglio, San Marco, 30125

Another gem of Venice. This church is famous because instead of traditional figures of saints, its facade is adorned with outlines of cities such as Rome, Padua, Corfu, and others. The architect, Giuseppe Sardi, thus decided to immortalize the memory of his friend, Admiral Antonio Barbaro, whose figure crowns the entire composition, with the cities representing places where the Venetian military served.

Inside the church are housed equally valuable treasures, including the painting "Holy Family" (presumably by Rubens) and works by Tintoretto.

19. Lace Museum

Address: Piazza Baldassarre Galuppi, 187

Venice is renowned worldwide not only for its famous glass but also for its lace. The handcrafted lace items from Burano Island are still highly prized, and you can learn about the history of this craft at the Lace Museum on its homeland, Burano Island. The museum houses authentic handmade lace, some of which are over 500 years old.

Museum Hours: From April 1 to October 31 - 10:30 to 17:00; from November 1 to March 31 - 10:30 to 16:30. Closed on Mondays.

Entrance Fee: €7

20. Glass Museum

Address: Murano Island, Fondamenta Giustinian, 8

You can get closer to the traditions of Venetian (specifically Murano) glassblowing art by visiting the Glass Museum located in Palazzo Giustinian Murano.

Here, you'll learn ancient glassmaking techniques passed down from generation to generation by masters, and you can also buy a piece to remember from the museum shop.

Opening Hours: April 1 to October 31 - 10:30 to 18:00; November 1 to March 31 - 10:30 to 16:00.

Entrance Fee: €11
