The Lithuanian capital is a unique blend of modern Europe and authentic old-world charm. In today's post, we offer useful tips for those planning to visit Vilnius.
How to get there?
Vilnius International Airport is located 7 kilometers from the city center. As usual, you can get there by train, bus, or taxi.
The airport railway station has a direct connection to Vilnius Central Station, which takes only 7 minutes to reach. Trains to Daugavpils and Warsaw run daily (once a day, with a transfer at the border). You can find ticket prices and view all routes here.
If you decide to travel by bus, there are several options to choose from:
Buses run from the airport to Vilnius railway station (route No. 1), to the city center (No. 2), and to the Šeškinė district (No. 1A). A ticket costs €1, and the journey takes only 15 minutes.
Alternatively, you can use the services of TOKS, whose minibuses run from Vilnius bus station to the airport and back. You can view the timetable here.
For those who want to save as much as possible on their trip, direct city buses are always available. To plan your trip on public transport, find the stop you need, or check the route, we recommend taking a look here.
The bus schedule can be found here.
The taxi rank at the airport is located immediately outside the arrivals terminal in a specially designated lane. Both cash and credit cards are accepted for payment.
Tip: always ask for a printed receipt for cash payments at the end of the journey!
A trip from the airport to the city will cost you €10-15.
The cost per kilometer is €1-1.5.
When to go?
The climate in the Lithuanian capital is temperate continental, but with sharp temperature fluctuations. Traditionally, the best time to visit Vilnius is from the second half of April to June and from mid-August to early October. And, of course, in December–January, when the Christmas and New Year holidays are in full swing.
However, we would not recommend traveling here in July or early August. First, it rains quite often at this time of year, and spending your entire trip in a hotel is, admittedly, a rather dubious pleasure. Secondly, even if you are lucky and the weather is sunny and hot, you are unlikely to be able to lie on the beach — the sea is quite far from the capital.
A trip to Vilnius in winter requires a good supply of warm clothes — the average temperature here in winter is -8-10ºC, and in February it can drop to -15ºC or even lower. In addition, it is often windy.
However, in April and May, it gets noticeably warmer (+10-18ºC), and in May, the influx of tourists is not so great, so you can calmly explore the city and its surroundings.
Summer is quite warm (+20ºC in June and up to +30ºC in July), but rainy, so make sure you have a raincoat or umbrella with you.
The weather in Vilnius is quite changeable in autumn. September brings Indian summer with temperatures around 20°C during the day and cool nights. In October, frosts are common, with daytime temperatures of +5-7°C, and the first snow is possible at the end of the month. November is the coldest month, with daytime temperatures rarely rising above +5°C.
Where to go shopping?
Of course, the Lithuanian capital cannot be called a mecca for shoppers, but even here, if you know a few little tricks, you can buy a couple of great things. In addition, prices in Vilnius are significantly lower compared to other European capitals. When you go shopping, keep in mind that several times a year, stores in Vilnius have sales. During these sales, discounts on goods can reach 80%. The largest sale takes place on the eve of the Christmas holidays, from December 19 to 24 inclusive.
Not only residents of the capital enjoy shopping here, but also visitors:
- Akropolis is Lithuania's most popular shopping and entertainment complex. It has over 250 stores offering a wide variety of products (many of which are well-known brands).
- Ozas has two hundred brand stores, including Timberland, Pretty One, Forever 18, Jack & Jones, and Bijou Brigitte. In addition to stores with youth clothing, Ozas also has boutiques with luxury clothing.
- Panorama. Boutiques include Tommy Hilfiger, Mexx, Guess, Bershka, Pull and Bear, and many others. A special feature of the center is the large number of stores for expectant mothers and children, such as Chicco, Mothercare, and Lego. There is also a wide selection of brand-name shoes.
- Parkas Outlet is a large outlet mall. Here you can buy products from other Vilnius stores at a discount of 30-70%. The mall has more than 40 brand stores (Triumph, Parfum Express, Apranga, Walking, Eurokos, etc.), as well as sports stores such as Nike, Reebok, Puma, and Adidas.
