Perast's history traces back to the 13th century when it was a fishing settlement and occasional refuge for pirates. Its golden age occurred during Venetian rule, marked by the construction of palaces, churches, and defensive towers. After World War II, it became a part of Montenegro within Yugoslavia.
Despite its small size, Perast boasts numerous historical attractions, making it worth spending a few hours exploring. Nestled between cliffs and the Bay of Kotor, the town's compact size and preservation efforts ensure that every building, no matter how ordinary, is of historical significance. Perast is often referred to as the "city of millionaires" due to the high value of its real estate, with each house worth over 1 million euros. To maintain its unique atmosphere, new construction is prohibited, allowing only the restoration of old houses.
