The founders of the city can be considered the ancient Greeks who established the fortress of Odessos on this site in the 7th century BCE. The fortress was later under the control of the Macedonians and then the ancient Romans. In the 7th century, Varna was mentioned as part of the Bulgarian Kingdom in Byzantine chronicles. The rich history has brought many events and ancient structures to the city. Today, in Varna, you can admire the ruins of ancient Roman baths and a necropolis. Numerous relics are collected in the city's museums. And the true gems of the city are its cathedrals, with the Assumption Cathedral being particularly remarkable. Beautiful sandy beaches stretch for many kilometers. There are beaches with well-developed infrastructure as well as completely "wild" ones. Apart from the attractions and beaches, there is plenty to do in the city. Numerous parks invite you for a stroll or a family picnic, and Lake Varna is notable not only for its therapeutic mud but also for offering excellent fishing opportunities. For lovers of delicious cuisine, Varna is simply a gastronomic paradise, with fresh seafood, generous portions, and traditional Bulgarian dishes. In the evenings, you can leisurely stroll and admire the illuminations on the longest bridge in Bulgaria or head to a discotheque for some entertainment.
