The Tzarevetz Hill was settled by humans as early as the 3rd millennium BCE. At that time, the Thracians settled here. Later, the ancient Romans built the first fortress on this site. Then, the area belonged to Byzantium, and it was only in the 7th-8th century that the Bulgarians settled here. It was during the Second Bulgarian Empire that they built the Tzarevetz Fortress here. The unique relief of Veliko Tarnovo makes walking around the city very interesting and unusual. The main street changes its direction and name several times and passes by the main attraction of the city, the Tzarevetz Fortress. Moving along the main street to the west of Tzarevetz, you will walk along the ridge of the hill, which is washed by the Yantra River on both sides. In this part of the city, there are hardly any paved roads, and houses are located on one of the slopes of the hill. Veliko Tarnovo is literally filled with churches, museums, and ancient streets. To visit all the iconic places of the ancient capital and soak in the atmosphere of a great empire, you should stay here for a few days. In addition to historical buildings, the city offers its guests the delights of local cuisine, the rich nightlife, or strolling through local shops and markets. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore eco-trails, go rock climbing, mountain biking, or take a horseback ride.
