History
The Tsarevets Hill, around which the city of Veliko Tarnovo was formed, was settled by Thracians in the 3rd century BC. Then the ancient Romans, Byzantines and Bulgarians built their fortresses here.
In the XII-XIV centuries Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Principality. The city was located on a cliff and was surrounded by strong fortress walls. And in the Tsarevets fortress lived the Bulgarian rulers.

Location and climate
Veliko Tarnovo has a strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes in the foothills of the Balkans. The city is situated on four hills, among which the Yantra River finds its way.
The best periods to visit the ancient capital of Bulgaria are spring and fall. In winter there can be severe frosts, while in summer temperatures can reach +30 °C.

The fortress of Tsarevets
The majestic structure is located on an impregnable rock. The size and splendor of the fortress amaze the imagination. In the central part of the fortress there is a palace complex. And at the highest point of Tsarevets is the magnificent Patriarchal Church.

From the fortress to the city center, the road passes through ancient streets. On these streets there are several workshops where you can buy interesting handmade souvenirs.

Bus
Buses depart from Burgas or from Varna. Buses from Varna go to Sofia and pass Veliko Tarnovo. Departure times are not always convenient, so you may have to make an overnight trip.
Car
One of the most convenient ways to get around on a trip is by rental car. From the coast to Veliko Tarnovo will take you only 2 hours. The route and the time of stops are up to you.
Excursion
A tour bus will comfortably take you to your destination, and a professional guide will tell a lot of interesting facts and legends.
