Shanghai, the world's largest seaport, is situated in eastern China, within the Yangtze River Delta, along the coast of the East China Sea. The city is bisected by the Huangpu River, dividing it into two main parts: the larger western part known as Puxi and the smaller eastern part called Pudong. Neighboring cities are connected to Shanghai through 20 ferry crossings.
The earliest reference to Shanghai as a city dates back to 1553. However, its foundation predates this period. It was during this time that the settlement acquired fortress walls, granting it the status of a city.
