1. Important Details to Keep in Mind

  • Before your trip, familiarize yourself with the baggage rules of all the airlines you'll be flying with, and ensure your carry-on and checked luggage comply with the strictest requirements.
  • Many airlines use specific measuring devices at the airport to check the dimensions of carry-on bags. Anything that doesn't fit within these measurements may need to be placed in your checked luggage. We recommend verifying your carry-on size in advance, preferably during online ticket purchase, as checking luggage at the check-in counter is usually cheaper than doing so at the gate.
  • Important Note: Low-cost carriers operate without connecting flights. Each leg of your journey is considered a separate flight, requiring you to retrieve and recheck your luggage, potentially incurring additional fees for each segment.

2. Bringing Liquids and Food in Your Carry-On

You are allowed to carry a total of 1 liter of liquids, but they must be in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 milliliters each. The container size matters; for instance, a nearly empty two-liter bottle with just a bit of juice won't be permitted. All liquids should be placed in a clear, resealable bag, similar to a zip-lock bag used for freezing fruit or a cosmetic bag. You should be ready to present this bag for inspection at the security checkpoint if requested.

Liquids encompass a wide range of items, including:

  • Roller deodorants
  • Shaving foam, shampoo, and shower gel
  • Toothpaste
  • Perfume and toilet water
  • Tonic, makeup remover, creams, and mascara
  • Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Medications, such as eye, nasal, and ear drops, oral solutions, tinctures, and gels
  • Some foods, like soft cheese, yogurt, pate, jam, honey, and more

There are two categories of passengers exempt from these restrictions:

  • Travelers with children under the age of two can carry food for their child in packages of any size, as needed for the flight.
  • Passengers who require regular medication can bring medications in containers exceeding 100 milliliters, provided they have a certificate from their attending physician.

Are you wondering if you can bring food in your hand luggage?

Yes, you can, but if the food is in liquid form, it must be in containers of 100 milliliters or less and packed according to the rules. Feel free to bring solid items like cookies, chocolate, apples, nuts, or sandwiches on board, but ensure that your food doesn't emit strong odors.

3. Can You Bring Electronic Devices on the Plane?

Absolutely! Have you ever witnessed how luggage is handled at airports?

You can carry the following electronic devices in your carry-on luggage:

  • Laptops
  • Mobile phones
  • Tablets and e-readers
  • Electronic cigarettes
  • Photographic cameras
  • Hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons
  • Electric shavers
  • Electric toothbrushes
  • Power banks

4. What Can't You Bring in Your Carry-On Baggage?

In a nutshell, you can't bring anything potentially hazardous to passengers or crew members due to toxicity or the risk of misuse.

  • Liquids in containers larger than 100 milliliters (unless purchased in Duty Free and properly sealed).
  • Aerosols like hairspray, deodorant, and mosquito repellent.
  • Piercing and cutting items such as screwdrivers, drills, nails, corkscrews, blades, knives, scissors, nail files, and sharp-ended tweezers. There are exceptions, like carrying a knife with a blade shorter than 6 centimeters or tweezers with rounded edges. You can bring syringes for injections with a doctor's certificate, but it's best to pack cherished items in checked luggage or leave them at home.
  • Firearms and any imitations of them, including lighters and children's toys resembling guns.
  • Adhesive tapes like scotch tape and duct tape.
  • Explosive and flammable substances like gunpowder, fireworks, and lighter fluid.
  • Mercury pellets and thermometers (some countries may have different rules, but electronic thermometers are a safe bet).
  • Skates, skiing and trekking poles.
  • Electroshock devices.
  • Harmful substances such as acids, alkalis, and poisons.
  • Sports equipment like bats, clubs, batons, nunchucks, oars, skateboards, and fishing rods.
  • Gas and gasoline lighters.

5. What About Purchases from Duty Free?

You can bring fragrances, toilet water, and both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages from duty-free stores on board as long as they are packed with the receipt and sealed. Just refrain from trying to enjoy that duty-free whiskey mid-flight.

If you have a connecting flight, there might be complications. It's against EU regulations to bring liquids in containers larger than 100 milliliters into the EU if they were purchased outside the EU. If you're traveling within the EU, having a receipt from a purchase made within the past day is usually sufficient. However, the airport officials have the final say.

6. Can You Bring Pets, Musical Instruments, and Sports Equipment on Board?

Each airline has its own rules, so it's advisable to inquire in advance. For instance, the Polish airline LOT allows three ways to transport animals: on board in a carrier, in the luggage compartment, or as cargo, depending on the animal's weight.

  • Ryanair typically doesn't transport animals except for guide dogs. These guide dogs are permitted on most flights except those to or from Israel and Morocco, provided you have the dog's passport and the passenger's medical documentation.
  • Sports equipment is usually checked as baggage or considered oversized cargo, subject to special fees (especially for items like skis or snowboards). Skateboards and tennis rackets, for example, aren't allowed in the cabin as they could theoretically be used as weapons.
  • Small musical instruments that fit within the allowed cabin baggage size (e.g., flute or violin) might be allowed in the cabin by some airlines. Anything larger usually needs to be checked as luggage.

7. How to Pack Your Carry-On Bag Properly and What to Do If It's Overweight

  • Items that are likely to be inspected at security (like laptops and liquids) should be placed on top for easy access. Your fellow travelers and airport staff will appreciate your efficiency.
  • Remember the 100-milliliter limit for liquids? If what you want to take isn't available in small sizes, consider transferring them into suitable containers; they don't have to be the original ones.
  • When packing liquids, avoid overfilling the containers.
  • If you're carrying medications, it's best to keep them in their original packaging with instructions. For prescription medications, especially strong ones or injectables, don't forget to bring a doctor's prescription.
  • Store valuable items in your carry-on: documents, money, jewelry, and electronic devices. And always keep an eye on your backpack at the airport.
  • It's a good idea to have a portable charger, some warm clothing, any essential medications, and a light snack handy in case of flight delays.
  • Check your bag for any unintentional prohibited items. The author once had to explain why she had scotch tape in her backpack to vigilant airport staff in Kutaisi.
  • If you're flying with a low-cost carrier, don't fill your backpack to its maximum capacity. Leaving some space inside allows you to compress it a bit and fit it into the frame used for size checks.
  • Weigh your packed backpack or suitcase at home to ensure it meets the airline's weight limits. If you find it overweight at the airport, you can wear some of the clothes you've packed, move heavy small objects into your pockets, or consider removing items like cameras or e-books, if the airline allows.

For flights to Poland, Europe, or the Middle East, passengers in economy class can carry hand baggage with dimensions not exceeding 55x40x23 cm and a weight of up to 8 kg. Business class passengers are allowed up to 9 kg of hand luggage.

For intercontinental flights (China, India, Japan, Canada, Kazakhstan, or South Korea), the airline permits two pieces of hand luggage with the same dimensions (55x40x23 cm) weighing up to 9 kg in total for Business Class passengers, one piece weighing up to 8 kg for Economy Class passengers, and two pieces weighing up to 12 kg for Premium Economy Class passengers.

In addition to hand luggage, passengers can also bring:

  • One woman's or man's bag or laptop
  • An umbrella
  • A small camera or binoculars
  • For travelers with children, food and a stroller, which we will describe in the transportation rules below
  • Passengers with disabilities can bring crutches or other personal medical equipment at no extra charge
Checked Baggage

The dimensions of one piece of checked baggage must not exceed 158 cm (height + width + depth). The cost and size of allowed checked baggage depend on the distance of your travel.

For flights to Poland, Europe, or the Middle East, the fee for checked luggage is €27.

For intercontinental flights (to China, India, Japan, Canada, Kazakhstan, or South Korea), the fee for checked baggage is €35.

Child Stroller and Car Seat

If your child is under the age of two and traveling without a separate seat, they can sit on your lap during the flight. In this case, you can bring a stroller or car seat at no additional cost, but these items will be transported in the aircraft's luggage compartment.

For children aged 2 to 12 years old, or for infants under 2 years old who have their own seat, you can bring a car seat on board, and the stroller can be checked into the baggage compartment for free.

If you need to use a stroller during your connection, complimentary strollers are available at Warsaw Chopin Airport.

Sports Equipment

You can bring one piece of sports equipment free of charge if it is packed in compliance with the airline's guidelines and weighs no more than 32 kg.

If your sports equipment exceeds this weight limit, you will be required to pay the applicable fee set by the airline.

Due to varying aircraft types, space for sports equipment in the baggage compartment is limited. Therefore, LOT asks passengers to notify the airline's contact center at least one day before their flight departure.

Hand Baggage

Every passenger is allowed one piece of hand baggage, which should not exceed 40x20x30 cm in size and must fit under the seat in front of you. Additionally, you can bring airport-purchased items free of charge.

If you require more space, you have the option to purchase an extra piece of hand baggage, weighing up to 10 kg, on a TimeFlex or Premium fare. The cost for this additional baggage varies between €24 and €59, depending on the flight. The maximum dimensions for this baggage are 55x40x20 cm, and it can be placed in the overhead compartment.

Special exceptions for carrying two pieces of hand baggage at no extra cost include airport assistance services (for individuals with special needs) and passengers traveling with infants under two years old.

Checked Baggage

Optima and Family fare passengers are entitled to one piece of checked baggage weighing up to 25 kg per passenger listed in the reservation.

If you wish to purchase additional checked baggage separately and reserve it at the time of ticket purchase, the costs are as follows:

  • Weight up to 15 kg - €10
  • Weight up to 20 kg - €11
  • Weight up to 25 kg - €14
  • Weight up to 30 kg - €26

Baby Stroller and Car Seat

If you're traveling with a baby, you're entitled to check two additional items in your baggage at no extra cost. These items can include a stroller, car seat, booster, folding crib, or stroller. Please note that an infant car seat may incur a fee if you wish to check it in as special baggage. If you want to bring a baby stroller as carry-on luggage, you'll need to check the carry-on suitcase at the baggage check-in desk, and it will be counted as one of the allowable items mentioned earlier.

Sports Equipment

Sports equipment like skis, windsurfing gear, bicycles, snowboarding kits, and more are classified as non-standard baggage and may incur separate charges. You can arrange for this when making your reservation or at a later date. Keep in mind that non-standard baggage must adhere to specific guidelines: it should weigh no more than 32 kg and not exceed 2.70 meters in length. Proper packaging is also essential.
