Tivat is currently the administrative center of the municipality that bears its name, and it happens to be the smallest municipality in Montenegro. The city's location within the Bay of Kotor means that the sea here is noticeably warmer than in resorts directly along the open Adriatic coast. Tivat offers a total of 17 well-maintained beaches catering to various preferences, from secluded and almost wild spots to popular beach hubs with extensive infrastructure and numerous restaurants.
Tivat has plenty of places to explore as well. A good starting point is a tour of the medieval Buča Palace, which happens to be the oldest surviving structure in the city. This castle is situated in Tivat's historic old town. While Tivat's founding dates back to the 2nd century BC, most of its buildings are relatively new. Notable architectural landmarks include the Local History and Art Museums, along with the Summer Theater.
There are also about a dozen churches in Tivat, with the most famous ones being Trinity, St. Savvatius, and Archangel Michael. Nature enthusiasts will find the local botanical garden quite intriguing.
Throughout the tourist season, Tivat hosts two international events: the Bokel Olympics and the Festival of Summer.
