Brazil's basic customs regulations

Foreign Currency: There is no limit on the import of foreign currency. However, if you are carrying more than $1,000 USD, it is mandatory to declare it upon entry into Brazil.

National Currency: The import of the national currency is limited. You can only take out the amount of foreign currency that you declared upon entry. For the national currency, you can export it only with a license issued by the Central Bank of Brazil.

Items You Can Carry into Brazil on an Airplane Tax-Free:

  • Tobacco products: 400 cigarettes or 25 cigars;
  • Personal items such as clothes and books;
  • Other goods and articles with a maximum total value of 500 USD;
  • You can bring one of the following items: tape recorder, player, radio, photo camera, movie camera, video camera, or PDA.

Additional Information:

  • All non-Brazilian-made video, movie, audio equipment is taxable;
  • Children under 14 traveling with an accompanying parent or guardian are allowed only personal items and goods;
  • Prohibited Items: Narcotics, firearms, ammunition, medicines, radioactive materials;
  • It is forbidden to export any wild animals, their skins, and products made from skins, shells, feathers, and claws;
  • Meat, meat products, dairy products, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as plants and their parts may not be exported;
  • Alcohol Allowance: The total volume of any alcohol must not exceed 2 liters. You can take alcohol out of Brazil, but you can't bring the same Brazilian alcohol back.
