To Denmark by car

Everything a motorist needs to know about Denmark.

Hiring a car in Denmark is a convenient way to travel independently. If you're at least 23 years old and possess an international driver's license and a credit card, you can rent a car in any city in Denmark. Your credit card will be temporarily charged with a deposit, which typically includes insurance.

Age restrictions in Denmark for car rentals are specific. If you're under 26, you may be subject to an additional "young driver's fee" when renting a car. The car class you can rent also depends on your age:

  • Economy class car (e.g., Renault Clio - from 30 EUR/day) or compact class car (e.g., Opel Astra - from 35 EUR/day) - available from 23 years old
  • Middle class car (e.g., Mazda 5 - from 60 EUR/day) and standard class car (e.g., Ford Mondeo - from 100 EUR/day) - available from 26 years old
  • Premium class car (e.g., Mercedes C180 - from 190 EUR/day) or Luxury class car (e.g., Mercedes E350 - from 270 EUR/day), minibus, and models not belonging to the above classes - available from 28 years old

Speed limits in Denmark:

  • On autobahns - 130 km/h (some sections may have a limit of 110 km/h)
  • On ordinary roads - 80 km/h
  • Within any settlements - 50 km/h

The cost of a liter of gasoline in Denmark is currently 1.41 EUR. You can track changes in the cost of gasoline in Denmark here.

Danish traffic rules:

  • Marker lights must be on at all times.
  • Fog lights may only be switched on during fog or heavy rain and outside populated areas.
  • Passengers must be buckled up.
  • Children must be transported in car seats.
  • Bicyclists have priority on the road.

Police officers in Denmark have the right to collect traffic fines on the spot. If you refuse to pay the fine on the spot, the case goes to court, and your car can be seized from you before the court.

Fines:

Failure to transport a child - 2,000 DKK.

Failure to use low beam - 1,000 DKK.

Unfastened seat belts - 1,500 DKK.

There are no toll roads in Denmark, but tolls are charged to cross the Øresundsbroen and Storebæltsforbindelsen bridges. The fare for a passenger car is 125 DKK (18 EUR).
