Tallinn sights

We offer you a list of Tallinn sights with names known all over the world.

When planning a visit to Tallinn, you don't necessarily need a thorough description of its sights, because even the most detailed map can't capture the spirit of old Europe that permeates the city. You should still get a map of Tallinn's sights, though.

Tallin sights with world-famous names:

The tower of St. Olaf's Church. It was once considered the tallest structure in the world (124 meters). That status is long gone, but the tower is still the tallest building in Tallinn. And here it will remain so - in the city, it is forbidden to build buildings higher than the spire of Olaf's Tower. Entrance to the church is free, but to get to the observation deck you have to pay 2 EUR. A narrow stone staircase with high steps leads up to it.

Near the middle of the stairway, there are folding stools on which travelers unaccustomed to medieval "service" can rest for a while. The tower starts to seem devilishly high after such a hike.

The view of Tallinn from the observation deck, however, rewards travelers for all the suffering experienced during the climb. As you admire the incredibly beautiful city with its tall spires and gingerbread houses, try not to think about the fact that you'll also have to walk back down.

Old Pharmacy. Town Hall Square is home to the oldest operating pharmacy in Europe, which has been in operation since 1422. A reliable enterprise in terms of employment, isn't it? Medieval medicines (burnt hedgehogs, dried toads, and other potions) are sold here.

For the most part, this pharmacy is a museum of medicines. Tourists can familiarize themselves with ancient recipes and learn when to use swallows' nests and when to use wolves' intestines, alcoholic solutions of mochi, or earthworms in oil. Any map of Tallinn with sights will tell you the exact location of this pharmacy.

Zero Kilometer Stone. In the middle of Town Hall Square is a large round stone resembling a sewer manhole cover. From this stone, you can see all 5 main spires of the city: St. Spirit Church, Town Hall, Niguliste Church, the spire of St. Olaf Church, Dome Cathedral. Once you have found all 5 spires, you can make a wish - it will definitely come true. From here, you can also see the main symbol of the city - Old Toomas weather vane. However, you'll only be able to see it in detail with binoculars.

Dominican Monastery. The oldest monastery in Estonia, founded in the 13th century. Today it's just ruins, so admission is free.

Dome Cathedral. Here you should find a floor slab with the inscription "Otto Johann Tuve". According to legend, this man was buried on the threshold of the cathedral to be able to atone for his sins. When a parishioner or tourist steps on the slab, Mr. Tuve prays for the fulfillment of his wish. For this, one sin is "written off" from him.

Lennusadam Maritime Museum. Tourists from different countries unanimously declare: this museum is the best in Europe. You can spend probably a week here. All exhibits are interactive, so the museum is more like an amusement park.

The main exhibit of the museum is a recently decommissioned real submarine "Landbit". It's stuffy, vibrating, humming turbines, confined space, narrow doors and tiny toilets - here you can feel all the "charms" of underwater life. Visitors are allowed to climb on the crew bunks and touch any interior items.

The Tallinn TV Tower. The tallest structure in all of Estonia, standing 314 meters tall. Entrance costs 11 EUR. You have to go up by elevator, observing at what height the cabin is at the moment. Once out of the elevator, tourists get to the surreal floor of robotic mushrooms that "grow" from the floor, walls and ceiling. These are entertainment computers that provide various information.

After playing with the mushrooms, you can tickle your nerves and for 20 EUR you can go "Walking over the Abyss" - with a safety rope, walk around the tower on its outer platform. From here you can see not only Tallinn, but, it seems, the whole Estonia. When visiting the city, photos of the sights can be taken from here.
