General information about Julläs

Location and history of the resort.

Jülläs is an abbreviation for Jüllästunturi hill, which is located in the municipality of Kolari (western part of the province of Lapland in Finland). The hill stretches to a height of 719 meters. On the way to the foot of the hill there are six more hills: Linio at 613 meters, then Kesänki at 517 meters, then Pyhä at 480 meters, then Kellostapuli at 460 meters, followed by Kukas at 460 meters and the last hill, Kuer at 443 meters.

Two villages are nestled at the foot of the hills. Actually, their location is the answer to the question of where Jülläs is. On the northern side of the slope you can enter the village of Äkäslompolo (Äkäslompolo in Finnish), and on its south side you can enter Ylläsjärvi (Ylläsjärvi in Finnish). The former includes the ski resort Ylläs-Ski and the latter the Sport Resort Ylläs. They ring around the hill, connected on both sides by the 11-kilometer-long Maisematie road. The Finnish currency in the resort is the European euro (EUR).

The resort is popular not only in the cold season, when people come here for winter entertainment. In summer, mountain biking and hiking enthusiasts gather here. On the territory of the resort there is the Jullas National Park, where there are many hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. The rivers attract lovers of canoeing and fishing. All questions regarding tourist walks are solved through the local tourist center of Greater Julläs.

Julläs ski slope

Before the skiing era, the area was inhabited by the Sami, who hunted, fished and farmed. It was not until the 19th century that vacationers began to come here for skiing. Despite the fact that the history of Julläs is not even a century old, it is considered one of the oldest resorts in the country. Julläs was founded in 1930 and quickly gained popularity among alpine and cross-country skiing enthusiasts.

The next stage of development came in 2005, when the road between the two villages was opened. And in 2007-2008 new slopes were equipped. The resort has the highest altitude drops compared to other ski centers of the country. The maximum drop is 463 meters.

In addition, the snow cover is always stable, so the slopes remain ideal all season long, including for slalom, freeride, telemark and snowboarding. You can ski here from October to May, but the first elevator starts working on November 22. The high season is from mid-February to the end of April, as well as Christmas holidays.
