Those who plan to swim and sunbathe should take into account that there are no organized beaches in the city. The nearest recreation area is Le Minime, three kilometers from the Old Port. In 9 kilometers from La Rochelle is located on the island of Re, on the beaches of which rest resort guests and locals. You can get there by the Ile de Re bridge.
If a quiet vacation is not to your liking, you can join water sports, rent a yacht, kayak or catamaran, go deep-sea fishing or swim in the open ocean.
Fans of hiking are recommended to start exploring the city from the Old Port. On both sides of the port there are towers (Saint-Nicolas and La Chaîne), between which in case of danger a chain was stretched to close the entrance to the harbor. Walking along the fortress wall, you will find yourself at the tower of La Lanterne, where the inscriptions made in the XVII century by pirates imprisoned here are preserved.
La Rochelle has museums that will appeal to both adults and children. It is worth a look at the Maritime Museum, where ancient ships are collected, as well as the Museum of Mechanical Figures, the owners of which for many years have been looking for and buying moving toys (dolls, cars, trains) at auctions in different countries.
