Amidst the incredible nature of Bavaria, there is a small village that borders the lands of Germany and the Austrian Tyrol.
This cozy resort town in the Bavarian district emerged as a result of the merger of two settlements located on the Loisach River. Garmisch and Partenkirchen now represent a popular destination for winter skiing and summer relaxation, enjoying spa treatments, and simply breathing in the fresh air.
The history of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is closely linked with the Olympic Games. The world-class sporting event was held here in 1936, just after the founding of the city. If one counts the age of the spa town even earlier, one can trace a connection to the Romans and the Celts, who were later replaced by the Bavarians and the Allemens. The unique nature of the area encouraged people in ancient times to settle near the purest lakes, mountain rivers and nearby springs of mineral water.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen was officially founded in 1935 when the two settlements merged into one. To this day, the resort has not attained the status of a city, as the local population is only around 25,000 people.
The official currency of Germany is the Euro, and it is used for transactions in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as well.
