The city is over 3,000 years old and the monuments of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires have survived to this day. The Ano Poli district (historical center), which miraculously survived the 1917 fire, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Be sure to stroll along its streets - here you can see the preserved ruins of the Byzantine walls that once surrounded Thessaloniki, here is also the main fortress of the city - Heptapyrgion. By the way, Ano-Poli is the highest part of Thessaloniki, in clear weather from here you can see the top of Mount Olympus, which is 100 km away!
Interesting are the ancient churches. One of the most revered temples of the city is the Basilica of St. Demetrius, which houses the relics of the Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The Church of St. Sophia is one of the oldest in Thessaloniki, built in the VIII century.
Make time to visit the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the White Tower, whose observation deck offers a noteworthy view. Among the archaeological monuments, the ruins of the Roman Forum and the arch and tomb of Emperor Galerius are the most popular.
