The Thessaloniki map with sights includes sites from various millennia. Most of them are of religious significance, such as the Church of St. Sophia built in 690-730 AD, the Church of the Holy Apostles (1312-1315), the 13th-century Church of St. Panteleimon, the 5th-11th-century Latomou Monastery, and the early 14th-century Church of St. Nicholas Orfanos. The oldest of the bunch is the early Christian basilica of Achyropytos, built in the mid-5th century.
Samples of the most ancient mosaics can be admired in the St. George's Rotunda. This triumphal arch, built on an imperial tomb, is one of the city's oldest structures. The mosaics on its walls were painted as early as the late 4th century. Many tourists who have been to Thessaloniki, the description of the sights they have visited, begin with this majestic monument.
The most famous photo of Thessaloniki's sights is certainly the photo of the ruins of the Roman Forum, built back in the 2nd century A.D. This treasure was discovered only in 1960, and its restoration was started more than 40 years later - in 2003. From here you can walk to the Basilica of St. Demetrius.
While listing Thessaloniki's sights with names, one cannot help but think of the city's symbol - the White Tower, built by the Turks in 1430. During its "youth" the walls of the tower not only protected the city from enemy attacks, but also witnessed the suffering of many executed people. At that time, the tower was called "bloody". In order to forget about the negativity, the people of the city painted the walls of the tower white in the 19th century.
This name has survived unchanged to this day, although the white color has already washed out and turned into the traditional color of Greece yellow limestone.
The Thessaloniki sightseeing map is like a spider's web, with interesting buildings from different cultures and times tangled and preserved. The charm and majestic grace of each of them attracts tourists from all corners of the globe.
