1. Alberobello

This town is unique not only for Italy, but also, perhaps, for the whole world - it is not for nothing that since 1996 it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage lists. The reason for this is that its historical center is filled with trulli - old houses with cone-shaped roofs decorated with intricate drawings. Remarkably, they are all built without bonding mortar.

Travelers do not recommend planning long trips to small towns in Italy, as 1-2 days are quite enough to see all the local sights. We recommend to stop by one of the local souvenir shops (there are quite a lot of them here) and buy some original handmade memorabilia, as well as try local sweets. By the way, thanks to the inexhaustible tourist flow, Alberobello has quite a developed infrastructure, a lot of good stores and even a Michelin-starred restaurant.

How to get there: from Rome via Bari by train or bus (fare from €30).

2. Monte Isola

And this city occupies a whole island! And not just an island, but the largest and highest island-mountain in Europe. Monte Isola is surrounded on all sides by the waters of the purest Lake Iseo. Thanks to such a favorable location, as well as breathtaking views, for many years it has been popular with hang-gliders from all over the world. Windsurfing and sailing are equally respected here.

To get to this almost secret place, you have to go to the town of Iseo (by train from Brescia), and from there a boat will take you to Monte Isola. On the island itself there is no automobile traffic - there are only buses, but it is enough, because its area is only 12.8 square kilometers. It is noteworthy that there are not so many foreign tourists on the island - mainly Italians themselves come here to rest.

How to get there: by car or cab from Milan (distance - about 100 km)

3. Barga

In the ninth century it was the home of the influential Rolading family, and a few centuries later the town of Barga, one of the major commercial centers of Florence, was founded. In its present form, Barga is one of the most beautiful and interesting places for curious travelers.

You can book a hotel in Barga with a discount of up to -65% on the website.

The greatest interest is, of course, the historical center: the medieval fortress, surrounded by an impregnable wall, perfectly preserved to this day.

In addition, Barga has observation decks and lookout points everywhere, so it is highly recommended for lovers of beautiful views. In addition to the fortress, the Porta Reale city gate, the Old Bridge and the Cathedral of San Cristoforo are also worth a visit.

How to get there: the nearest major city is Florence, and it costs €7-9 by train via Lucca to Barga

4. Collodi

Carlo Lorenzo once took the pseudonym Collodi in honor of his mother's homeland and then wrote it into history, giving the world the wonderful tale of the wooden boy Pinocchio. Today, thousands of tourists come to this former village, which has grown to the size of a town, every year to stroll through the fairy-tale park dedicated to the heroes of the famous story.

It's worth noting that Collodi itself is also quite remarkable, with old houses lined up in a narrow row on a hilly, densely vegetated area. You'll have to climb up the main road to get through the town, but the views are definitely worth the effort. Also worth a visit are the old Garzoni Park and the Butterfly House.

How to get there: Collodi is not far from Florence and can be reached by train from there for €5

5. Monteriggioni

You may have read about the towers surrounding the majestic Monteriggioni in Dante Alighieri's famous Divine Comedy. Since then, the city has lost none of its majesty and beauty and beckons tourists with a real medieval flavor.

Back in the XIII century the town was turned into an impregnable military fortress with 14 towers. The fortress and the ancient church of St. Mary are the main attractions of Monteriggioni. Travelers recommend to see the fortress wall in all its glory from the Colle di Val d'Elsa highway adjacent to the municipality.

How to get there: from Florence by bus for €9
