The eternal city and the city on 7 hills — much has been written about Rome, it has long been one of the most popular destinations for travelers, but this does not make it any less relevant.

What movie to watch for inspiration?

  1. "The Great Beauty" by Paolo Sorrentino.
  2. "Sweet Life" by Federico Fellini.
  3. "Roman Adventures" by Woody Allen.

Day 1

Center. Rome's top sights are concentrated in the center, but prepare yourself to walk around with your mouth open at the surrounding beauty.

To go inside any famous building, you'll have to wait in line. However, that's why I love Rome: you can see everything from the outside for free without buying tickets. Or you can buy tickets in advance online, if you have time.

Start at the beginning — the Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill and the Colosseum. You can buy tickets here. By the way, you can see the Forum without a ticket — the best view is behind the Capitoline Museum.

Next on the list, find your favorite place in Rome:

  • Piazza Venezia, Vittoriano (Monument to Victor Emmanuel II). A monument that has been nicknamed "Typewriter", "Wedding Cake", "Mouthpiece", etc. by locals for its appearance.
  • Piazza Navona is one of the most touristy squares. It is home to the Fountain of the Four Rivers, the Fountains of Neptune and Moor.
  • Piazza Torre Argentina not only ancient ruins, but also a shelter for hundreds of seals.
  • The Pantheon, "the temple of all the gods." A Roman mystery, it is unknown who built it and why. Entrance is free. Admire the light stream that passes through the hole in the dome of the temple.
  • Trevi Fountain. Don't forget to flip a coin, turning your back to the fountain, over your right shoulder: one to return to Rome, two to meet love, three if you want a wedding. Then the coins thrown into the fountain by tourists are used to buy food for the homeless.

Using our website, tripmydream, you can find airline tickets starting from 15 EUR.

  • Piazza España, Spanish Steps. Sit down for an Italian gelato on the steps and feel like Princess Anna from "Roman Holiday" (Audrey Hepburn) or her companion :)
  • Piazza del Popolo. Find the differences between the twin churches of Santa Maria in Monte Santo and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, flanked by the obelisk of Flaminia
  • Villa Borghese, the Borghese Gallery with the largest collection of antique paintings and sculptures. Tickets can only be purchased online.

For dinner I recommend the restaurant Canova Tadolini, which is the sculptor's house-museum.

Day 2

We continue exploring the city center, only heading in a different direction.

  • We start at the Grand Circus (Circo Massimo), a hippodrome where chariot races were held in ancient Rome.
  • The Bull Forum and the Mouth of Truth is the mask of Triton, also made famous after "Roman Holiday" with Audrey Hepburn. According to legend, by sticking his hand in the mouth of truth, he will swallow it in case of telling lies.
  • Orange Gardens (Giardino degli Aranci or Parco Savello). One of the most atmospheric and romantic places in Rome, there are street musicians playing and a viewing platform. It is especially beautiful in the fall and winter, when oranges are ripe. Honeymooners often come here to have their pictures taken.
  • After the walk it's time to go to the Trastevere district for Happy Hours — it's aperitivo time, special offers-menu in bars: wine or aperol + various snacks. "Aperolize" with chips for 3 euros, with Italian appetizers from 10 euros.
  • Walk the streets of Trastevere and stay for dinner or a party, this area is full of bars and restaurants, prices are lower than in the center

Day 3

The third day is advised to be dedicated to the Vatican:

  • St. Peter's Square and Basilica (Piazza San Pietro). Entrance to the basilica is free, you can climb the dome for 6 and 8 euros (on foot and part of the way by elevator), to buy a ticket — from the entrance to the basilica go to the right.
  • Vatican Museums, where you'll find the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's "Last Judgment" fresco. You can easily spend 4 hours in the museums. Ticket from 8 euros, on the last Sunday of the month the entrance is free, but the queue is impressive. There are options for night tours. You can buy tickets online.
  • Send your parents friends or yourself a postcard from the Vatican post office.
  • Castel Sant'Angelo (Castel Sant'Angelo) and Elijah Bridge. It's hard to imagine that the castle was once the tallest building in Rome.
  • Meet the sunset with a stroll along the Tiber or on the Victor Emmanuel II Bridge.

In the neighborhood, I recommend Capitan Cono coffee shop and Goose restaurant.

If you're in Rome for more than 3 days, go to Ostia. A neighborhood by the sea with beach clubs, happy hour bars, restaurants, stores. Beach parties at night. The best place to try frittomisto, a mix of seafood fried in batter, small eateries put it in a paper cup.

What to try:

  • As many types of pasta and pizza as possible. My favorites are Farfalle pasta with pesto sauce and vegetables or Fettuccine with seafood, and Neapolitana pizza with anchovies.
  • Lasagna, risotto, ravioli, carpaccio.
  • Frittomisto and seafood dishes, my favorite is octopus in different variations (Polpo).
  • Tomato Gazpacho soup.
  • In the store: prosciutto, parmesan.
  • Gelato — ice cream.
  • Sweet: cannoli tubes, tiramisu.
  • Of alcohol: aperol spritz and limoncello.
  • Coffee! Try it everywhere. Remember that you drink cappuccino until lunch, then only espresso. If you order a latte, you'll get a glass of milk, ask for "café latte".

Frankly speaking, walking around Rome, it is hard not to be tempted by shopping. Stores in the center are concentrated on Via del Corso, Via Cola di Rienzo, Via dei Condotti, Via Nazionale. The second option is to find the nearest shopping center to your apartment.

Important nuances:

  • Be sure to check the opening hours of establishments and attractions. Restaurants may be closed during the day and attractions may be open until 18:00-19:00.
  • State museums are free on the first Sunday of the month; admission is by line only.
  • Consider whether you need a bus pass. If you live in the center, you can get around on foot. You can buy bus passes at newspaper or tobacco stands.
  • Download the Maps.Me app or Google Maps to use it offline, and mark in advance the places you want to visit.
