History and architecture of the station

Košice Railway Station is the main station of the city and one of the most modern in Slovakia. The address of Košice railway station is located in the eastern part of the city, near the center. It has been in operation since August 14, 1860, when the first railway line from the Hungarian town of Miskolc was launched. Later there were routes to Presov, Žilina and Černá nad Tisou. From 1896 from Košice it was also possible to go to Turunya nad Bodvoy, and after the construction of the Jablonov tunnel in 1955 a southern line to Zvolen was established.

From Košice there are trains from the state-owned carriers Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko, České dráhy, MÁV (Hungary), as well as from private companies RegioJet and LeoExpress. In addition to the usual commuter routes, you can go directly from here to Budapest, Vienna, Prague and Bratislava.

It all started back in 1857, when Košice was preparing for an important visit - Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife Elisabeth were coming here. The town was actively restored, including the construction of a Swiss-style pavilion in the center. A couple of years later, in 1859, Košice took a major step towards a railroad future by donating land to the railroad. This gave a strong start to the development of local routes and connected the town to other parts of Austria-Hungary.

Around the same time, construction of the line to Miskolc began. A test train departed on July 5, 1860, and regular service started on August 14. The first station looked simple: two buildings with a central hall. There was a water tower, depot, warehouses and aprons. In 1908 the wooden shed burned down. In 1886 a post office building appeared nearby, and in 1891 the central station was completely rebuilt. The new station in the French Neo-Renaissance style was designed by architect Josef Hubert from Budapest

In 1967, construction of the modern station building began. It was designed by architect Ot Ziak, built by local companies, and cost 90 million crowns. The new station was inaugurated on December 29, 1973. It served for almost 40 years - until 2011, when a major reconstruction began.

The reconstruction of 2011 and ended in 2016. As a result, the Košice Central Railway Station became a shopping space with 31 stores. The station square was also renovated for the 2011 Ice Hockey World Championship. At the same time, the entrance area, offices and shopping area were renovated.
