Customs in Sri Lanka, this kingdom of sunshine and tea, have slightly different rules than the European customs we are used to.
1. What you can bring into Sri Lanka on an airplane
- Any amount of foreign currency (amounts over 10,000 USD are declared)
- National currency not exceeding 5,000 LKR
- Up to 250 ml of toilet water and up to 56 g (2 oz) of perfume
- Goods for non-commercial use totaling up to 250 USD
- Cigarettes or tobacco on payment of duty (for importation of items between 72 and 84 millimeters long, 6.7 LKR per piece is charged, longer than 84 millimeters - 7 LKR, for 1 kg of tobacco or cigars - 1300 LKR)
- Domestic animals with prior authorization from the local Department of Animal Production and Health (DAPH). A stamp duty of 5 LKR and a customs duty of 250 LKR per animal will be charged. Domestic cats and dogs must be accompanied by an international veterinary certificate and a rabies vaccination certificate.
2. What is prohibited to bring into Sri Lanka
- Drugs
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives, edged weapons
- Plants, fruits, poultry
- Medicines (except for personal use - such medicines must have a prescription)
- Pornographic or propaganda material
- Atheistic printed or video products
- Commercial goods (except for trade samples)
- Materials of a pornographic or propaganda nature
- Printed or video products of an atheistic nature
3. What It is prohibited to export from Sri Lanka
- Narcotics
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives, edged weapons
- Plants, fruits, poultry
- Medicines (except for personal use)
- Antiques
- Objects of historical or cultural value, masks, manuscripts, books, ivory, coin and stamp collections, animals, plants, coral, raw precious and semi-precious stones without prior authorization
- More than 10 kilograms of tea
4. How much alcohol can be brought into Sri Lanka
- Up to 2 bottles (0.75 liters) of wine and up to 1.5 liters of spirits for persons over 18 years of age
- Up to 3 liters of any beverage
