The resort is recognized as the best place in Sri Lanka for water sports such as diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing. Hikkaduwa's central beach, Naigama, is usually packed to the brim with tourists and enthusiasts, but to the north, there is a quiet cove where you can relax away from the crowds. Here is the Hikkaduwa Coral Reef National Park, which boasts about 70 varieties of coral. If you don't plan on diving, consider booking a transparent-bottom boat tour or renting a catamaran for the trip.
There are turtle farms in the vicinity of the resort. A visit to these farms allows you to learn all about these animals, and you can even participate in releasing baby turtles into the ocean. For those interested in gemstones, a visit to Moonstone Mines is a must, where these precious stones are mined. After the tour, you will be offered a chance to visit a store that sells exquisite jewelry.
If you find yourself on Seenigama Island, be sure to pay your respects to the people whose lives were lost in the 2004 tsunami. The monument is a statue of Buddha, at the foot of which there are plaques with the names of the victims. Nearby, there is an exhibition of photographs commemorating the natural disaster.
