Public Transportation
Hikkaduwa, being a small coastal town that even feels like a village, doesn't offer an extensive network of public transportation. It's primarily a question of how to reach nearby attractions or neighboring coastal towns. Within the resort itself, transportation is rarely a concern, as you can easily navigate the area in about half an hour.
Transportation options in Hikkaduwa mainly consist of taxis and the typical Sri Lankan three-wheeled tuk-tuks. The most common type of taxi is the minibus, which can accommodate up to 8 passengers and may or may not have air conditioning.
Fare
The prices for such transportation are generally reasonable. For example, you can reach Galle from Hikkaduwa for around 1,000 LKR, while a trip to Colombo may cost 3,000 LKR or more. One piece of advice often given to tourists is to opt for tuk-tuks when using transportation in Hikkaduwa. They tend to be significantly cheaper than taxis, and there's often room for negotiation with the driver, depending on the situation.
Shuttle buses and trains, including express services, are available as well. Many visitors choose to rent motorcycles for added flexibility. For buses, keep an eye out for signs and directions and pay your fare inside; there aren't usually external ticket offices, but conductors can guide you on where to disembark if needed.
