Australian Customs

Australia's basic customs regulations.

What can I bring on an airplane to Australia? These are goods for personal use (gifts, photo and video cameras, sports and electronic equipment, leather goods, watches, perfumes and jewelry often require confirmation and surcharges) with a total value of up to 400 AUD for persons over 18 years of age and up to 200 AUD for persons under 18 years of age. A reasonable amount of clothing, footwear and personal hygiene items can also be brought in baggage free of duty.

From what is prohibited to bring into Australiathe following can be listed: drugs, steroidal drugs, cold and firearms, protected plants, animals and animal products. Any animals, food, plants and products made from them must be declared and subject to quarantine control. When importing cash in excess of the equivalent of AUD 5,000, it must be declared.

How much alcohol can I bring into Australia? Travelers over the age of 16 can bring up to 1 liter of alcoholic beverages into the country duty-free. An adult traveler (regardless of residency) can carry no more than 50 cigarettes or 50 grams of tobacco duty-free. The pre-existing limits (250 cigarettes or 250 grams of tobacco) have been reduced by 80%.

When you arrive at the airport, you and your luggage may be sprayed with disinfectant. Every plane arriving in Australia is treated with disinfectant. The fine for knowingly carrying prohibited products ranges from 32 to 5790 USD or up to 5 years in prison.

Every passenger over the age of 12 pays a tax when leaving the country. Among the things that are prohibited to take out of Australiaare animals and plants, wildlife (coral, shells, reptiles). Items of historical value (without proper authorization), items made of wood and bamboo, leather, bone, bird feathers, shells, and coral cannot be exported.

How much alcohol you can take out of Australia depends on where you enter. So bring a couple of liters of local wine with you.

Australian customs doesn't have the tax-free system that Europeans are used to, but it does have a similar program called the Tourist Refund Scheme. You will be refunded the VAT included in the cost of goods. The system works very simply: in the store you buy goods in the amount of 300 AUD, and be sure to keep all receipts. After passing the transport control you look for TRS service and present the purchased items and receipts (all goods should be in hand luggage), as a result you will get back approximately 13% of the cost. The total amount can add up to a lot, so don't be reluctant to take advantage of this convenient indulgence.
