If you want to locate Sihanoukville, simply look at the southwestern part of Cambodia, where it stretches along the coast of the Gulf of Thailand. Unlike some of Cambodia's more renowned tourist destinations, Sihanoukville has a relatively recent history.
Sihanoukville was established as a tourist city in 1955, primarily due to the development of a major seaport within the city and the construction of its first hotel, "Independence." Even Jacqueline Kennedy herself stayed within its walls. The key industries supporting the city's economy, as well as the country's, are maritime transportation and tourism.
The national currency of Sihanoukville and Cambodia is the Cambodian riel (KHR). The city's population numbers around 200,000 people. Even during the high season, the beaches are not overly crowded with tourists, as the area receives fewer visitors compared to neighboring Thailand.
