Transportation in Cyprus

Public transportation in Cyprus: its peculiarities and ticket prices.

Public transportation in Cyprus is quite developed. It is mainly represented by buses and cars. There are no railroads in Cyprus, transportation between cities is carried out by buses and shuttle buses.

On average, a ticket for a 50 km stretch of road costs about 5 EUR. In the northern part of Cyprus, intercity buses run frequently with lower ticket prices, around a couple of EUR for a 50 km journey. In the Greek part of the island, there are several buses a day between cities, and in small towns, there is a chance to travel once or twice a day. Buses are often not available on Sundays.

In larger cities, there are municipal buses and minibuses running from 06:00 to midnight, in spring and fall until 19:00, and in the Greek part until 17:00. On Saturdays, the buses run until lunchtime, and on Sundays, the drivers have a legal day off. Shuttle buses cost twice as much as a regular bus fare. There are no shuttles to the airports, leaving that slice of the market to cab drivers.

Taxis can be stopped on the street, hailed through the hotel receptionist, or by phone from any store or restaurant. There are two fares: the day fare, which is valid from 06:00 to 20:30 and the night fare, which is valid from 20:30 to 06:00 and is 15% more expensive. However, the tariff for luggage transportation remains the same regardless of the time of day. If a cab is hired for sightseeing, it is important to agree in advance with the driver on the payment amount.
