General information about Prague

The capital of Czech Republic is situated in Central Europe. The city is spread across hills and islands divided by the Vltava River. It serves as the largest economic and cultural center of the country. Presently, Prague has a population of 1.3 million people. The official language is Czech, and the national currency is the Czech crown (CZK).

The precise date of the city's foundation is uncertain. It is believed that Prague was established by the ancient Slavs around the 6th century B.C. Throughout its history, Prague has consistently held a prominent position in the region. In the 10th century, it served as the capital of the Czech state, in 1918 as the capital of the Czechoslovak Republic, and since 1993 as the capital of the independent Czech Republic.

Prague remained remarkably untouched during World War II, preserving its medieval cathedrals, castles, and other architectural treasures. Nowadays, the city is undergoing a construction boom, with modern buildings emerging alongside its historic structures.
