The precise date of the city's foundation is uncertain. It is believed that Prague was established by the ancient Slavs around the 6th century B.C. Throughout its history, Prague has consistently held a prominent position in the region. In the 10th century, it served as the capital of the Czech state, in 1918 as the capital of the Czechoslovak Republic, and since 1993 as the capital of the independent Czech Republic.
