Where is Courchevel

Location and history of the resort.

The elite resort of Courchevel is located in the French Alps, in the Savoie department, in the center of the Tarentaise Valley. It is part of the Three Valleys skiing area, and consists of four stations: 1300, 1550, 1650, 1850. The last one is a vacation spot for glamorous stars and respectable oligarchs.

The national currency of France — euro. And be prepared to pay a considerable amount of euros for a comfortable vacation.

Judging by documentary data, Courchevel was founded in 1946. The peculiarity of this area is the fact that in 1992 here were held XVI Winter Olympic Games. And in general, it is considered one of the oldest resorts in the world, because if you dig deeper into the history of Courchevel you can learn a lot of interesting things. For example, in the early twentieth century there were only pastures for cattle walking.

The first Lac Bleu hotel appeared in 1908, but due to heating issues, it only welcomed its first tourists in 1925. The founders of Courchevel — Laurent Chappis and Maurice Michot — began implementing their project immediately after World War II, as part of a plan to develop the tourism sector in newly liberated France.

After some disagreements and tensions, the resort was initially named Lower Courchevel, but the name was later changed: the local residents did not want to live in the shadow of the mountain and the new part of the resort. At a general meeting, it was decided to assign the areas the names 1550 and 1850. This decision also had a marketing purpose: in reality, the resort is located at altitudes of 1747 and 1827 meters, but the higher the number, the more prestigious the resort is perceived — and that’s what the founders settled on.
