Marseilleans are true Frenchmen. They favor their national cuisine. That's why all restaurants in Marseille offer, above all, traditional French dishes: fish and other seafood.
The capital of Provence is famous for its world-famous and delicious bouillabaisse soup. It's a Marseille soup flavored with garlic sauce, saffron and toasted croutons. Also try bourride, a fish dish made with monkfish, mayonnaise and diced vegetables.
Here you will also find fougasse, a flat Provençal bread that is baked in a wood-fired oven. Sometimes it is topped with olives, cheese or anchovies.
For desserts, we recommend trying the classic Provencal sweet, calissons, which are made only in Aix-en-Provence. It is made with ground almonds and dried fruit, covered with a glaze, and tastes like the famous marzepan.
Alcohol lovers should try pastis, an alcoholic drink with anise and spices, very popular in the region.
