When planning a trip to Akhaltsikhe or the Vardzia cave city, we recommend visiting the Hertvisi Fortress.
Informational Overview
The fortress gets its name from the merging of the Kura and Paravnistskali rivers. Scientists claim that even Alexander the Great fought battles in these areas during the Eastern Campaign. In the 10th century, the structure was fortified with massive stone walls and tall towers.
The Hertvisi Fortress changed hands multiple times, serving feudal families, Turks, and only in 1828 did it become the property of Georgia. It underwent significant reconstruction at that time.
In 2007, the fortress was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. You can find a lot of interesting historical information on the signs located near the fortress.
Today, the fortress remains consist of stone walls and a citadel. If you walk to the west, you can see the ruins of a church and other buildings, as well as a tunnel for supplying drinking water located in the northwest.
Hiking Trail in the Mountains
If you enjoy hiking, you will appreciate a trail that passes through the surrounding mountains. You will have the opportunity to see rare species of birds and plants in these areas, and there are also a couple of interesting places worth exploring. The length of the trail is 7.5 kilometers, and the hike will take about three hours. Don't forget to bring a hearty snack along the way.
