A couple of decades ago, this structure was in ruins and abandoned. After its complete reconstruction, tourists from all over started flocking here to explore the vast territory of the complex. We recommend you to visit Rabati Fortress as well. It will leave a lasting impression in your memory.
Historical Background
The fortress has a long and eventful history. It has survived invasions, near-total destruction, neglect, and changes in power. By the 21st century, only a couple of ruins remained, which were of little interest to anyone except archaeologists. Tourists rarely visited and only for a brief period.
Former President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, managed to do the impossible - the fortress and its surroundings were completely rebuilt and now attract hundreds of tourists. Today, along with the ancient structure, there is a museum, a hotel, and many other buildings.
Interesting Facts:
- The design of the complex was intended to resemble Jerusalem.
- "Rabati" means "fortification" and refers to the area adjacent to the fortress.
Fortress Territory
The complex is located on a vast territory, spanning 7 hectares, and is divided into two parts - the lower and upper parts.
Lower Part
You can enter this part for free. There are also two toilets - one is paid, and the other is free of charge.
The lower part includes: ticket office, information desk, vineyard, souvenir shop, towers, a lovers' alley, hotel, cafe, and even a puppet theater.
The territory of Rabati Fortress is very beautiful, and everything is done in one style. The abundance of greenery complements the overall style of the complex, and the paved paths ensure a comfortable walk. The stunning views are a pleasant bonus, so don't forget to bring your camera.
In the lower part, there is even a registry office, so you can tie the knot and take great photos here.
Upper Zone
This part of Rabati Fortress is paid, and you will need a ticket to enter - there is a guard at the entrance.
The upper zone is more enriched with structures. Here you can explore the historical part of the complex, including the Ahmediye Mosque, a gazebo with a fountain, the Church of St. George, a marble colonnade, a Pasha's resting room, a madrasa, a citadel, and a mescit hall.
The church and mosque have very interesting histories. The church survived the rule of the Turks and served as a storage facility multiple times, while the mosque was even used as an Orthodox church (when Russian soldiers arrived), and large stone monuments with crosses can still be seen in the mosque.
The Historical Museum in the upper zone is also an intriguing tourist attraction, displaying household items and weapons. Admission is charged separately. Once you step into the territory, you will be amazed by the grandeur and charm of the buildings and the overall area.
The highlight is the tower with the Georgian flag. In the past, the fortress was controlled by the Jakeli family, who later sided with the Turks out of fear for their safety. If you climb the tower, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Rabati Fortress and its surroundings.
Opening Hours
The fortress welcomes visitors daily. Allocate enough time to explore the fortress and the entire complex - you will need a minimum of three hours.
The lower part is open continuously and looks particularly beautiful in the evening, in the rays of the setting sun.
The upper part operates from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. Admission to this area costs 6 GEL.
The Historical Museum is open until 6:00 pm, and admission costs 2 GEL. You may consider hiring a Russian-speaking guide for your convenience, but this would involve an additional fee.
