Where is Criopigi located?
Kriopigi is a small and cozy Greek village, located in the north of the peninsula Kasandra in Halkidiki, 90 km from Thessaloniki. By an extraordinary design of nature, the amphitheater-shaped town stands on a hill 100 meters above sea level. Kriopigi falls under the administrative category of Macedonia.
The population of Kriopigi is not large at all, but the number of people in the resort increases during the hot season. Despite the relatively young age of Kriopiga as a center for vacationers, the tourist infrastructure of the town is actively developing.
History of the town Kriopigi
As already mentioned, Kriopigi is a young resort, especially when compared to its millennial coastal counterparts, Athens or Corinth. Kriopigi was founded in the 19th century and was then called Pazarakia (Παζαράκια) - bazaars. On both sides of the settlement were once the ancient Greek cities of Flegra and Neapoli. The name Flegra comes from the plain where, according to legend, a memorable battle between ancient Greek gods and titans took place. Also local inhabitants are mentioned as active fighters for liberation from the Turkish yoke in 1821. From this we can conclude that the resort has a rich and interesting history.
