The historic region of Emilia-Romagna, home to the city of Bologna, is located in the north of Italy in the foothills of the Apennines. Bologna is now one of the most economically developed cities in Italy, with one of the highest living standards in the country.
Bologna was founded by the ancient Etruscans in 510 BC and was called Felsina. Later the city changed hands until it became one of the richest cities in the Roman Empire. There was a rapid development in Bologna in the Middle Ages, when the city received the status of a free commune. Already in 1088 the city had its first university in Europe. In the later Middle Ages, Bologna emerged as the main intellectual centre of Europe.
The city proudly bears this title to this day. Bologna has a population of just over 380,000 people, growing by almost 100,000 during the session.
