Hiking trails in Bologna

The best way to get to know the city is on foot. Here you'll find some good walking routes.

Bologna's hiking trails start in the city's most famous square, Piazza Maggiore. It is home to the most important monuments of the Middle Ages and Modern Age, the San Petronio Basilica, built between 1390 and 1659. Its portals are decorated with magnificent bas-reliefs.

Few sightseeing itineraries in Bologna are complete without a visit to the Church of San Francesco, built in the French Gothic style which is unusual in Italy. The main tourist route through Bologna includes visits to the Fallen Towers, numerous palaces of Italian nobility from different eras. Be sure to visit the Archigymnasium of Bologna, which was the seat of the University of Bologna until 1803.

Bologna's tourist itineraries include not only architectural sightseeing, but also visits to the Pinacoteca Nazionale and a wide variety of museums. If you plan to visit museums extensively, we recommend purchasing the special Bologna Museums Card. It costs 6€ and you could save a considerable amount of money by going to the Museum of Archaeology, the Jewish Museum and the Gallery of Modern Art.

According to your personal interests and hobbies, you can plan your itinerary by yourself. Walking in Bologna is especially popular during traditional holidays, such as St. Petronius, the patron saint of the city, which is celebrated on 4 October.
