Bologna's hiking trails start in the city's most famous square, Piazza Maggiore. It is home to the most important monuments of the Middle Ages and Modern Age, the San Petronio Basilica, built between 1390 and 1659. Its portals are decorated with magnificent bas-reliefs.
Few sightseeing itineraries in Bologna are complete without a visit to the Church of San Francesco, built in the French Gothic style which is unusual in Italy. The main tourist route through Bologna includes visits to the Fallen Towers, numerous palaces of Italian nobility from different eras. Be sure to visit the Archigymnasium of Bologna, which was the seat of the University of Bologna until 1803.
