Traditional Milanese cuisine

Italian gastronomy is rich and varied. It is known to be light and hearty at the same time. That's why gastronomic tours to Milan are extremely popular.

Traditional dishes of Milanese cuisine:

  • Risotto alla Milanese: Milanese risotto is prepared with "Arborio" or "Carnaroli" rice. It is cooked with onions and beef broth over low heat, then enriched with butter and Parmesan cheese. The final touch is the aromatic and vibrant yellow saffron.
  • Cotoletta alla Milanese: This is a well-beaten veal cutlet on the bone, coated in beaten egg and breadcrumbs, and fried in butter. It resembles a Viennese schnitzel but, unlike the schnitzel, it has a bone in it.
  • Fish and seafood: Although Milan is located far from the sea, it is home to the best and largest fish market in Italy. So, there is an abundance of fresh seafood in Milan, and you must try it. Moreover, you can do so in practically any restaurant or cafe.
  • Lombard cheeses: Lombardy, the region where Milan is located, is famous for its cheeses. Most of them are made from cow's milk. This is the birthplace of the world-renowned Grana Padano and Gorgonzola cheeses. Drizzled with honey, Gorgonzola makes for an exquisite Milanese dessert.
  • Panettone: This is a traditional Milanese Christmas cake. Panettone is a tall cake-like bread filled with raisins, almonds, chocolate, and candied fruits. It is topped with warm powdered sugar, glazed, and coated with sweet mascarpone. The dough for panettone is poured into a paper mold, baked in it, and then sold as a finished "bread".
