Going to Italy by car

Everything a motorist needs to know about Italy.

Of course you can go to Italy by car, but we still advise you not to waste your precious time on vacation and rent a car in Italy to see enough of this country and visit the small non-touristy cities.

Prices for car rental in Italy start from 35 EUR per day for an economy-class car. We advise you to rent a car in Italy from major companies because small ones are often unscrupulous and can "hang" on you old car damages.

Rental car conditions in Italy include:

  • The driver must present a passport, a European-style driver's license, and a credit card in their name.
  • The minimum age for renting a car in Italy is 25 years old (if you are between 18-24 years old, you can use the "Young Driver" service, which requires an additional fee of 15 EUR per day).
  • You must have at least one year of driving experience.
  • In many major rental companies, a deposit amount will be blocked on your credit card for the duration of the car rental. It will be promptly unblocked upon the timely return of the car without any damage.
  • In most cases, rental payments can only be made with a credit card.

Key features of traffic rules in Italy include:

  • In roundabouts, vehicles already in the roundabout have the right of way.
  • The legal blood alcohol content limit for drivers is 0.5 per mille (approximately 0.5 liters of beer). Even a slight exceedance of this limit can result in a fine starting from 260 EUR.
  • Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited.
  • All highways in Italy are toll roads.
  • Speed limits in Italy: 130 km/h on toll highways, 110 km/h on roads outside urban areas, and 50 km/h within built-up areas.
  • Parking spaces are indicated by wide white lines.
  • All drivers are required to carry a reflective vest. Violating even such a minor rule can result in fines in Italy.

You can refer to the current gasoline prices in Italy at the time of publication: 95 octane gasoline - 1.60 EUR, 98 octane gasoline - 1.75 EUR, diesel - 1.45 EUR. You can refuel by yourself or with the assistance of a gas station attendant who may also offer to clean your windshield. Gas stations in Italy are comfortable stops where you can have a snack and enjoy a cup of Italian coffee. The most popular gas stations are Autogrill and Finigrill.
