The city is a cluster of islands intersected by 160 canals. Venice is divided into the mainland and island parts, cozyly situated in the Adriatic Sea lagoon. It is located in the northern part of Italy. The population of Venice (mainland + island part) exceeds 270,000 people. The currency used in the country is the euro (EUR).
The first mention of the settlement dates back to the middle of the 5th century. It seems to have got its name from the Venetian tribe who lived there at that time.
The city of Venice was founded in the second half of the VI century, but at that time the central part of it was the islands of Torcello and Malamocco. For a long time, the Venetian islands were ruled by the Doges, viceroys of the Byzantine Empire. In the XIII century, thanks to the trade routes and connections, the Venetian Republic was a powerful state. Now it is a major cultural and tourist center of Italy.
