It's no secret that Riga was one of the "cinematic" capitals of the USSR. It was here that the famous Sherlock Holmes series and Seventeen Moments of Spring were filmed. When you visit Riga, be sure to explore the places where the legendary detective and the equally legendary Soviet spy once walked!
Begin your walking tour of Riga on a small street called Jauniela, or New Street. Of particular interest here is the Jugendstil-style Bokslafa revenue house. Can you recognize it? This is where Holmes and Dr. Watson resided in house No. 22!
In the movie, it served as the fictional 221B Baker Street. Unfortunately, these days, the residents of Riga don't make much of the "Soviet Sherlock Holmes" brand, except for placing the number "221B" on the house for tourists from the former USSR.
Next on your Riga itinerary is house No. 24 on Jauniela Street. Today, it houses the Justus Hotel and the Aleks restaurant. However, in the TV series Seventeen Moments of Spring, it was depicted as the house on Blumenstrasse. Yes, indeed, this is where the safe house was located, and in the window of this house, Professor Pleischner failed to notice the flower.
Your Riga tourist route will lead you to Heders laukums square. This is where the unmasking of the murderer took place in the series "The Bloody Inscription." In the shot, you can clearly see the Dome Cathedral behind Holmes' back.
Continuing your walking route in Riga, you'll arrive at Smilšu iela, 8. Today, this beautiful building in the Art Nouveau style houses the Slovak embassy. In the first series of "The 20th Century Begins," it served as the residence of the German spy Lukas.
Finally, you can conclude your stroll around Riga at 3 naži (formerly Three Fish Bistro) on the same street. It may not be a film location, but they serve exceptional trout!
