Maldives Customs

Maldives basic customs regulations.

On entry, foreign citizens will have to communicate with Maldives Customs.

First of all, you will need to apply for an entry permit - the visa is issued at the airport upon arrival. Remember that customs officials will need to see your return ticket, as well as the original and a copy of your fully paid travel voucher. Or an amount of cash for in-country expenses based on 150 USD per day.

When going through customs, you must not only fill out an immigration card, but also declare any personal items that are worth more than 200 USD. If any of these items are missing on departure, you will have to pay duty. You can bring one carton of cigarettes, i.e. not more than 200 cigarettes. Standard international rules apply to the carriage of plants and animals. Video and audio equipment requires a special permit.

The question of how much alcohol you can bring into the Maldives is simple - it is illegal to bring any amount of alcohol into the Muslim country that is the Maldives. The question of how much alcohol you can take out of the Maldives is similarly simple - none. You simply will not buy it in free sale in the country. The only exception is Duty Free stores. In this case, you should be guided by the rules of importing alcohol into your home country.
