Transportation in the Maldives

Public transportation in the Maldives: its peculiarities and ticket prices.

Public transportation is not usual in the Maldives. If you buy a tour with accommodation in one of the hotels, it will organize your own transfer to the place of accommodation, which is usually already included in the price of the tour.

The hotel will also take care of transportation to possible excursions. Usually speedboats, traditional dhoni boats or ferries are used as means of transportation.

If the hotel is on one of the outer islands, a seaplane will come to pick you up. If you're flying to the islands on your own, you'll be driven from the airport to the island state capital of Male within 10 minutes for 10 USD.

By the way, car transportation is only available on a few of the largest islands, including the capital Male. Visitors are only taken by cab. Since the island is relatively small, wherever you go, the cost of the trip has a flat rate of 2-3 USD. Please note, if the cab stops even for a minute, you have to pay for it. If you continue the ride, it has to be paid for separately.

The local population mainly travels on motorcycles and scooters, which especially in Male' are very plentiful. Tourists are often offered to rent a bicycle. It is convenient to move between some islands, which are connected by a small shoal. In general, it is the safest form of land transportation on the islands.
