General information about Cancun

In the second half of the 1960s, a group of Mexican analysts decided to create a resort area that would surpass Acapulco in every way. This was followed by the creation of the "Cancun project" on the Yucatan Peninsula, founded in January 1970.

To find out where Cancun is, you need to look into the heart of Central America. The city can be divided into two parts - Ciudad Cancun, where the locals live, and Isla Cancún, an area reserved for tourists.

The island of Cancún is shaped like the number 7. On a sandy strip of 22 kilometers long, there is a tourist zone with a huge number of hotels.

The island is connected to the mainland by the Playa Linda Bridge in the northern part and the Punta Nizuc Bridge in the southern part. Between these two distinct areas lies Laguna Nizucupte. Cuculcan Boulevard is considered the main transportation artery of the island.

The name of Cancun means "snakes". But tourists needn't worry, as there are no poisonous snakes on the sunny peninsula.

The Mexican peso (MXN) is the official currency of Mexico and Cancun in particular. The population of Cancun is 530,000, but with the influx of tourists, this figure increases significantly.
