Winter Weather and Climate
Chisinau has a temperate continental climate. Winters aren’t really cold—but they aren’t warm either.
| Month | Average Temperature | Snow |
|---|
| December | +0°C (from -5°C to +7°C) | Possible, melts quickly |
| January | -1°C (from -8°C to +5°C) | 3–5 days per month with precipitation |
| February | +1°C (from -6°C to +6°C) | Snow cover may last 1–3 days |
A sustained snow cover is rare. More common: gray skies, rain, or sleet, +2–5°C. But there are days with temperatures as low as -10°C and real snowdrifts—several times a winter. Dress in layers and wear waterproof shoes.
Christmas and New Year's in Chisinau
Moldova celebrates both Catholic Christmas (December 25) and Orthodox Christmas (January 7). The country’s main Christmas tree stands in Piața Marii Adunări Naționale. The Christmas market in the city center features mulled wine (vin fiert), honey gingerbread, handmade crafts, and a carousel for children. The atmosphere is cozy and not overly crowded.
On New Year’s Eve (December 31), there are concerts in the square and fireworks at midnight. Restaurants fill up fast—be sure to reserve a table a week or two in advance.
January 7 (Orthodox Christmas)—night services in the cathedrals, general celebrations, and the city is quieter than usual.
Things to Do in Winter
The Cultural Program—The Best Time of Year
In winter, the opera house, the Philharmonic, and the Organ Hall are in full swing. There are more performances and concerts than in the summer. Tickets are more affordable, and there are no lines. If you’re planning a cultural getaway, December through February are ideal.
March marks the start of Mărțișor —Moldova’s oldest music festival (since 1967)—featuring over 40 concerts in 12 days. If you can visit in early March, be sure to do so.
Food and Wine
Chisinau’s restaurants are more intimate and cozy in the winter. Enjoying wine with mamaliga and meat after a stroll through the chilly city is a completely different experience than in the summer. Chisinau’s wineries don’t close in the winter.
Movies, Theater, and Nightlife
Cinema City and Cinema MallDova feature new releases year-round. Clubs (Escobar, Boulevard, Dance Planet) are livelier on weekends in winter, since people have nowhere else to go outdoors.
Wine cellars in winter—the best time to visit
Krikova and Milesti Mić are open year-round. In winter, there are almost no tourists. The underground temperature remains a steady +12°C in both winter and summer—it’s always the same down there. But above ground, there are far fewer visitors in winter, so the tour feels more intimate, and the guide takes more time to explain things in greater detail. The ideal time to visit the wine cellars is November through March.
Spas and Warm-Weather Activities
Demand for spas increases in winter. Crown Thai Spa, Wellness & Spa Termal, Vivi SPA, and Aquaterra are open and can get crowded on weekends. Be sure to book in advance.
A hammam in winter is a special treat after a cold walk. Most spa centers have a hammam or a Finnish sauna.
Indoor pools (Asaki St., Vyrnav St., Aquaterra) are even more popular in winter.
Prices and Reservations in Winter
December (before the holidays) and January–February are the off-season. Hotel prices are 20–40% lower. Flights are cheaper. Restaurants have no lines. Exception: December 31 and Orthodox Christmas (January 7)—restaurants are packed, and hotel rates go up.
For budget-conscious travelers who enjoy culture and wine, winter is ideal.
