The natural areas of Alvor are represented by numerous varieties of pine trees, cork trees, chestnuts, English, Pyrenean and stone oaks. Eucalyptus trees have also recently become common in southern Portugal. The vegetation of Alvor is a unique forest area, which is home to mammals such as lynxes, wild goats, foxes, weasels, badgers, ferrets, Iberian wolves, forest cats, hares, mongooses and chameleons. The marshlands of Alvor serve as a haven for 600 species of migratory birds traveling from Europe to Africa.

The Alvor River and wetlands are home to 50 species of freshwater fish, including the giant European catfish.
