The Alvor area, nestled between the mouths of the Alvor and Arad rivers, offers an excellent opportunity to explore the natural habitat of the local flora and fauna. Tourist routes in Alvor include hiking trails through salt marshes, wetlands, and woodlands. Nature enthusiasts can also enjoy hiking in Alvor's wetlands within the Ria de Alvor Biosphere Reserve, a sanctuary for dozens of migratory bird species and various animals. This area has held international protected status since 1996.
Alvor's walking itineraries also encompass a hike to two dunes that separate the Alvor River's mouth from the Atlantic Ocean, creating a unique coastal lagoon. The lagoon, its surroundings, and the Quinta da Roja and Abicada peninsulas together form a rich ecosystem spanning 1,454 protected hectares.
For independent travelers, there's the option of staying at the spacious Alvor Camping site, which accommodates trailers, cars, and tents. The campground provides amenities like a swimming pool, free Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, showers, baby baths, a playground, a restaurant, snack bar, mini-market, and barbecue area.
