Public transportation
The capital of Slovenia is a small, compact city, so frugal tourists can get around it even on foot. But if you come with children or long walks are not in your plans, Ljubljana's comfortable public transportation is at your service. The city's transportation infrastructure is represented by buses and cab services.
To get a rough idea of how much a cab ride will cost, do some simple calculations: add the kilometerage multiplied by 1.5 EUR to 2 EUR for boarding. So, for 10 kilometers of travel in a car hailed from a local cab service (such as Taxi Ljubljana or Taxi Metro), you'll pay about 17 EUR.
You will need a bus ticket if you are going to visit the outlying areas or neighboring cities (the bus station offers 20 routes in and out of the city). Ticket prices vary depending on distance, but in general transportation services are quite affordable (from 1.20 EUR for a 90-minute trip).
Local transportation
The city also has a funicular, which is a must for every tourist. At the top of the funicular is one of the most convenient viewing platforms. The funicular takes you from Krek Square to the famous Ljubljana Castle. You can buy a one-way ticket (2.2 EUR) or a round-trip ticket (4 EUR). The 70-meter climb takes 10 minutes. Please note that the cable car timetable differs in different months.
Trains to neighboring European countries leave from Ljubljana railway station (for directions, timetables and prices, see here).
