Where is Benalmadena?
Any detailed map of Spain will tell you the answer to the question "where is Benalmadena?". Benalmadena is part of the province of Malaga, the heart of the autonomous community of Andalusia. The area to which the city belongs is called Costa del Sol Occidental.
The city is small, with a population of just over 60,000 people. But its coastline stretches along the Costa del Sol for a full nine kilometers. The whole of it is made up of beaches, creating a wealth of opportunities for coastal vacations.
A little bit of history about Benalmadena.
It's not easy to say exactly when Benalmadena was founded. There were already human settlements on its present territory four thousand years ago, as evidenced by archaeological finds. Under Roman rule, Benalmadena was a small village within the municipality of Malaga.
After the fall of Rome and until the arrival of the Arabs in the VIII century AD Benalmadena was in deep decline. The Arabs built the fortress of Ibn al Madena to protect it from attacks from the sea. They grew figs, grapes, sugar cane and silk.
In the 15th century, Benalmadena was captured and destroyed by Christian armies. After which it literally rose from the ashes, reborn under new rule.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Benalmadena had paper mills and grew sugar cane. The city went on to experience economic crisis, revolution and civil war.
In the fifties of the twentieth century Benalmadena began to develop as a tourist resort. And now it is one of the best vacation destinations in Spain.
