Where is Arosa?

Location and history of the resort.

The resort town is located 168 km from Zurich, in the canton of Graubünden. With a population of 2,285, it is part of the district of Plessur. The resort boasts the highest number of sunny days per year, its own microclimate and the cleanest air. Arosa is endowed with all these riches thanks to its protection from the winds in the Schanfig valley.

The history of Arosa goes back a long way, as it is one of the oldest resorts in the Alps. It appeared more than a hundred years ago. Arosa was officially founded back in 1883. It was in that year that Dr. Otto Erwig-Hold accidentally discovered the abandoned village during one of his ski trips.

The doctor appreciated the unique microclimate and the presence of three lakes and began to recommend the area to all his friends and acquaintances. After 10 years several hotels appeared here, and in 1894 Arthur Conan Doyle himself created the first advertising campaign for the town, writing an article about it in SKI magazine.

Today, this area in Switzerland is very popular with alpine skiers. Switzerland's currency, the Swiss franc, is now in circulation in Arosa.
