The first thing to note on a Zurich sightseeing map is St. Peter's Cathedral, the city's main symbol. Located in the Old Town, on the banks of the Limmat, its bell can be heard all over the Altstadt!
If you look at a photo of this Zurich landmark, you'll immediately notice the huge clock face on the tower - it's the largest in Europe (it's about 9 meters in diameter!). Naturally, the clock works with amazing precision - and is it possible to do otherwise in Switzerland?
A description of this Zurich landmark is in every guidebook - the Grossmunster cathedral with its twin towers. According to legend, this church was founded by Charlemagne - it's said to be where his horse knelt before the graves of Felix and Regulus (these saints are considered the patron saints of Zurich). If you spare 5 CHF and climb the 187 steps, you'll reach the tower's observation deck, which offers one of the best panoramas of Zurich.
The most space on the Zurich sightseeing map is occupied by the Old Town with its narrow streets and cozy pastry shops. Although the first urban district is actually not that big - only 1.8 km².
There are plenty of spectacular monuments here: the Town Hall (check out the lantern in front of the guardhouse - Zurich's first!), the old university, the equestrian statue of burgomaster Hans Waldmann, the remains of Roman baths (follow the Termengasse steps from St. Peter's Cathedral and you'll find them) and Carolingian houses.
Mount Uetliberg is not on many maps with Zurich sights in Russian. Meanwhile, one of the best observation towers in the canton of Zurich is located here, offering views of Zurich and Lake Zurich, with the Alps looming in the distance. You can get here in 20-30 minutes on the S10 train (from the main station to Uetliberg station).
The name of this Zurich landmark is known to all art lovers. Here, in Switzerland's largest art museum, the Kunsthaus, you will find paintings by Picasso and Dali, Munch and Hodler, Giacometti and Monet. Tickets cost CHF 10-15 and the museum is open from 10:00 to 20:00.
