Historical sights of Marmaris

Marmaris is the descendant of the ancient city of Physcus, so it's not surprising that artifacts from the ancient era can still be found within its territory. The influence of the Ottoman Empire has also left its mark on the streets of the resort.

Fortress Museum

The myth surrounding the construction of this fortress is quite ambiguous: some historians, including the legendary Herodotus, believe that the castle was built around the 3rd millennium BCE, while others claim it was built in the 10th century CE. In any case, the structure underwent significant modifications during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Since then, the Marmaris Castle-Museum (Marmaris Kalesi) has showcased the following architectural features:

Amphitheater

Marmaris Amphitheater is one of the oldest historical sights of the city, dating back to the 5th-6th centuries BC. The cultural monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Geographically, it is located near the central cemetery of Marmaris.

Thanks to reconstruction at the end of the last century, today the amphitheater is able to receive up to 20 thousand spectators who come to listen to classical music.

Sedir Island

Sedir Island, also known as Cleopatra Island, is located 16 km away from the resort. Tourists who visit the island as part of an excursion are told the legend that this territory was a gift from Mark Antony to Cleopatra. As the famous beauty did not like the sand on the island, it was specially imported from other places. To this day, the municipality of Marmaris imposes a significant fine for attempting to take even a handful of its golden sand.

Kyz-Kumu

Kız Kumu, also known as the Maiden's Beach, is a unique natural phenomenon located near Marmaris in the village of Orhaniye. Due to its shallow waters, this local beach is beloved by tourists with children.

Marmaris beaches

The coast on the territory of the resort itself and its environs is one of the main attractions of Marmaris. The main beaches are:

İçmeler Beach: Located in a stunning bay among pine forests. Also known for being particularly favored by divers;

İçmeler Beach. Its length is about 4 km. The beach is located near Dalyan, and is famous for the fact that it is here that giant tortoises lay their eggs;

Embankment-port Netsel

Netsel Embankment is territorially located in the heart of a natural bay. It is she who connects the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas.

More than 700 ships of various sizes can be moored here at the same time. Marina Netsel is 34 km long, so small yachts and luxury ships can fit along it. Its 4-kilometer continuation is the city embankment.

There is a sailing school nearby. Also, travelers along the Netsel Marina can find a dancing fountain, especially beautiful due to the illumination at night. It was built in 2012, and since then every day after 21:00 it has been delighting guests with a colorful show.

Grand Bazaar

In the Grand Bazaar, tourists and locals can purchase the following goods:
